Adult by Abraham Maslow, the Hierarchy of needs is a system of human needs, get-go with physiological needs and leading up to more complex needs. Maslow believed humans are naturally motivated to achieve each level of need throughout their lifetime, much like instincts. The theory also states that one must satisfy their base needs before moving up to higher levels. (Myers Textbook) Therefore, if someone is hunger or thirsty or lacks shelter, all other chore and motivations volition be overlooked until this demand is satisfied. Maslow believed that the ultimate goal of humans was to reach self-actualization. He stated that human being motivate is generated by the need for fulfillment and personal growth; essentially, people strive to reach their greatest potential.

1. Physiological/Biological Needs: The nearly basic needs that are essential to survival. Must be met first before ascending to any other level in the hierarchy of needs. Air, food, water, shelter, sleep, warmth, sexual practice etc.

two. Safety Needs: Much like secondary motives, these needs are not physiological necessities, still they are important for survival. Protection from elements, security, order, laws, stability etc.

3. Belongingness and Love Needs: Mainly social needs. Companionship, affection, and dearest from family members, peers, community, etc.

iv. Esteem Needs: Need for achievements, independence, mastery, prestige, etc.

5. Self-actualization: realizing personal potential, personal growth, and self-fulfillment. 1.

Some question the validity of Maslow ' due south bureaucracy of needs because there is no sustainable research that fairly supports a systematic hierarchy of needs. There is very petty evidence of a ranking of needs as well as a hierarchy of needs. Additionally, critics feel Maslow ' s ideas of self-actualization are ambiguous and are based off of limited research. Maslow researched and studied a relatively pocket-size sample of individuals, many of whom were from the aforementioned socioeconomic groundwork. While some people may feel they have achieved their highest potential, they may not brandish the common characteristics that Maslow identified every bit a self actualized individual. i.
